The number that matters most on that chart is 85. Long or repeated exposure at or above 85 A-weighted decibels causes permanent hearing loss, and above that level the safe time shrinks fast. Quiet: 0 to 40 decibels
Zero decibels is not silence. It is the reference point the scale is built on, the faintest pressure change a healthy young ear can detect. Real rooms almost never get there. A bedroom at night with the window closed typically reads 25 to 35 dB, a library around 40 dB, and a refrigerator compressor about 40 dB from across the kitchen. A whisper at a few feet is roughly 30 dB.
This is the range you want for sleep and concentration. The EPA identified 45 decibels indoors as the residential level that prevents activity interference and annoyance. If your bedroom reads above that with everything off, something in the room or outside it is worth tracking down.
Moderate: 40 to 70 decibels
Most of daily life happens here. Steady rain on a window is around 50 dB. A normal conversation at three feet is 60 to 70 dBA according to the NIDCD, a dishwasher runs 45 to 65 dB, and a washing machine or a busy restaurant lands near 70 dB.
Nothing in this band threatens your hearing. The NIDCD is explicit that sounds at or below 70 dBA are unlikely to cause hearing loss even after long exposure. What this range does affect is speech, sleep and focus: background noise above about 50 dB starts making conversation work harder, which is why open offices and classrooms get tiring long before they get dangerous.
Loud: 70 to 85 decibels
This is where the noise level chart stops being about comfort and starts being about time. A vacuum cleaner is about 80 dB, city traffic heard from the sidewalk is 80 to 85 dB, and a garbage disposal or hair dryer sits in the same place. None of it will hurt you in a few minutes. Hours of it every day is a different question.
The WHO safe listening guidance treats 80 dB as safe for about 40 hours a week and 90 dB as safe for only four. A useful field test needs no instrument at all: if you have to raise your voice to be understood by someone an arm's length away, you are probably above 80 dB.
Dangerous: 85 decibels and above
A gas lawn mower is about 90 dB. A motorcycle is 80 to 110 dBA. Sporting events and concerts run 94 to 110 dBA, sirens 110 to 129 dBA, and a fireworks show 140 to 160 dBA, all per the NIDCD. A chainsaw is about 110 dB and a jet engine about 140 dB. A 12-gauge shotgun measures around 165 dB at the shooter's ear, which is well past the point where a single round can do permanent damage.
Above 85 dBA the question is never whether the sound is harmful but how long you stayed. At 100 dB — a nightclub, a stadium, headphones turned all the way up — the recommended limit is fifteen minutes a day. At 120 dB it is nine seconds. When does sound damage hearing?
NIOSH sets its recommended exposure limit at 85 dBA averaged over an eight-hour workday, and halves the allowed duration for every 3 dBA above it. Eight hours at 85, four hours at 88, two hours at 91, one hour at 94, and fifteen minutes at 100. Three decibels sounds like nothing and costs you half your day.

The legal standard is looser than the health recommendation. OSHA's occupational noise standard, 29 CFR 1910.95, permits 90 dBA for eight hours and uses a 5 dB exchange rate, so its Table G-16 allows 95 dBA for four hours and 100 dBA for two. It also requires a hearing conservation program at an 85 dBA eight-hour average and caps impulse noise at 140 dB peak. Damage does not announce itself. Noise-induced hearing loss usually arrives as a gradual loss of high frequencies plus tinnitus, years after the exposure that caused it, and it does not come back.
How do you read the decibel scale?
Decibels are logarithmic, not linear, which is why a decibel comparison chart is more useful than it first looks. Each 10 dB step is ten times the sound intensity and sounds to most people about twice as loud. So 70 dB is not marginally louder than 60 dB — it is ten times the energy and roughly double the perceived volume, and 90 dB is eight times as loud as 60 dB, not 50 percent louder. Measuring your own levels
Published decibel examples are averages taken at a stated distance. Your kitchen, your commute and your gym are not the chart, and the only way to know their ambient noise level is to measure. A browser-based noise level meter uses the microphone already in your phone or laptop and gives you a live reading plus the session peak, minimum and average.
Treat the result as an estimate. Consumer microphones are not calibrated instruments, they compress loud sounds, and readings from a phone typically land within a few decibels of a real sound level meter rather than on the nose. That is accurate enough to tell 55 dB from 85 dB, which is the decision most people are actually making. It is not accurate enough for an OSHA compliance record or a noise complaint filing — those need a Type 1 or Type 2 meter operated to a standard.
